about

I was about halfway finished writing for "All Points" when a song plugger friend of mine, Whitney Williams scheduled me for my first official "writing appointment". It was with a new songwriter who had just come to town. A fellow by the name of Troy Verges. I'm sure that there's only a handful of you out there that recognize this name. And with good reason. Troy didn't come to Nashville to make it big or become famous. Troy came to town to write songs. And write songs he did!!! Mr. Verges quickly became one of the most sought after, hit songwriters in town... if not the country. He is literally responsible for 75% of the country hit songs over the last 15 years. Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Bon Jovi.. the list of artist keeps going and going... have recorded his songs which has led Troy to win just about every songwriting award there is.
So when Whitney called me and said I had a writing appointment with this Troy guy, I just thought he was another writer from the row. And like so many times before I had a few ideas but not anything concrete to bring to the table. As a matter o' fact, the idea for "Playing Favorites" came to me in the shower that morning. I've always liked to have a solid first line to a song. And the shower is where this first line came to me. Then the chorus started coming. So I cut the shower short, found a pen and paper and wrote as fast as I could... I wrote until the time came to leave for the appointment.
Needless to say after Troy and I finished with this tune I was thrilled. We had finally written a song for the listener. Which is not the intention when we started out. It was going to be another relationship song. And I guess it can still be that, if that's what the listener what to take away with them.
But I will always play this song for folks who come to see me live. I am very proud to put "Playing Favorites"on the CD. I consider it one of my favorites to this day. And I'm proud to say that I held my own with one the most awarded songwriters ever to come through Nashville !

lyrics

Playing Favorites
(JB, Troy Verges)

I've returned to see
If you still remember me
And to look for something,
that I left behind
No it's not a material thing
It's just a little something that I need
And I'm hopin’ I can find it
Standing before you tonight

There's a magic that I feel
Every time, you are near

Let me see your smile
let it last for a while
All I need to hear
Is the sound of your voice
I will stay all night
As long as the feelings right
Playing Favorites
Between your heart and mine

Somewhere down the road
Just a few short years ago
I was searching for something lost in a dream
But no matter how far I’d roam
Oh my heart kept calling home
And what I lost is standing
Right here in front of me

There's a magic that I feel
Every time, you are near

Let me see your smile
let it last for a while
All I need to hear
Is the sound of your voice
I will stay all night
As long as the feelings right
Playing Favorites
Between your heart and mine

I must apologize
Fro the time that I’ve been gone
And if I could play just one more
I won’t take too long

Let me see your smile
let it last for a while
All I need to hear
Is the sound of your voice
I will stay all night
As long as the feelings right
Playing Favorites
Between your heart and mine

I will stay all night
As long as the feelings right
Playing Favorites
Between your heart and mine

From the foothills of NC Jonathan has been entertaining and turning heads for 35 years. Think of Keith Richards and Merle Haggard jaming with Lynyrd Skynyrd. In an over saturated world of “bro-country”, country outlaw wannabes, JB has remained true to the roots of his musical past. JBs music has been described as an in your face, southern country, roots rock, from the southern heartland. ... more
